Social and societal responsibility

STIB wants to be a responsible business, i.e. a business on which clients can count and which is able to meet its economic, social and environmental challenges and contribute to those of the Brussels-Capital Region.

Economic commitment

Participating in investments

5.2 billion euros of investment are planned for improving mobility in Brussels during the 2015-2025 period. For the most part, these large-scale investments will be financed by the annual allocation of investments awarded to STIB by the Brussels-Capital Region and the amounts allocated by the Federal government under the cooperation agreement with Beliris. As a responsible public company, STIB is also expected to help fund these investments, in so far as its resources allow, thanks primarily to savings made under the Drive programme.

In 2017, the drive programme provided savings of 39.8 millions euro.
The total cumulative amount for 2013-2016 was 140.3 millions euro.

The Drive Programme

The Drive programme establishes the plan for annual savings to be made by STIB during the period covered by its management contract, using measures to optimise purchases, maintenance activities, energy consumption, etc.In 2013, STIB committed to saving 116.4 million euros in 5 years, the equivalent of 129.5 million indexed according to the growth in operating costs. The full amount was reinjected in investments in mobility in Brussels.

Environmental commitment

Increasingly clean vehicles

STIB is continuing to replace and expand its fleet. It is also launching its energy transition with the purchase of new electric and hybrid buses. This change to its bus fleet will make travelling on public transport even more ecological. It also represents an additional step towards improving air quality in Brussels, and thus contributing to the well-being of all its residents.Trams and metros are powered by electricity and as a result do not directly produce any polluting emissions. Furthermore, STIB gets its energy from a supplier which is asked to prove (through Guarantee of Origin certificates) that it produces or purchases renewable electricity in quantities equivalent to its consumption.

A greener business

STIB's objective is to obtain ISO 14001 certification for all its activities. Objective achieved in 2017.ISO 14001 certification aims to encourage companies to control the impact of their activities on the environment and demonstrate the effectiveness of both the management systems and the continuous improvement of their environmental procedures, in a way that respects legal provision and takes into account the context and stakeholders. The business that audited STIB stressed among other things the investment quality of all the stakeholders and the excellent design of its environmental management system. In addition to creating a network of local internal correspondents, STIB developed an ambitious environmental policy to achieve this objective. Its aim is to continue working to reduce its environmental footprint in each of its activities (ordering of hybrid and electric buses, sorting of waste, reduction of water and energy consumption, reduction of noise and vibration pollution on the rail network, etc.).

Energy performance

In its Management Contract, STIB has undertaken to reduce its direct energy consumption for the period 2013-2017 by 8.5% compared to 2010, excluding changes in activity. The energy indicator represents the development of STIB's energy performances compared with the 2010 situation, all other things being equal. Energy efficiency is calculated in 5 areas: bus, tram, metro, electricity and fuel for infrastructures. The overall performance of STIB is calculated by adding the gains in each area in proportion to its contribution to the total consumption.Between 2010 and 2017, STIB's energy performance increased by 13%.

Societal engagement

29,000 people reached

Although STIB's primary objective is to achieve its mission as a transporter by offering an increasingly high standard of accessible public transport, it also has to deal with a number of societal issues on a daily basis. As a responsible business, STIB attempts to deal with these issues and has formed specialised partnerships over the last few years, particularly with stakeholders from associations. It carries out a range of actions targeting different sections of the public, including people living rough or in precarious situations, young people of school age and people with reduced mobility. 29,000 people were reached in 2017.

Meeting schools

The organisation of campaigns aimed at 10 to 18 year olds in schools remains a key way of making children and teenagers aware of the challenges and role of public transport. The "Responsible Young Passengers" (RYP) campaign encourages children in years 4, 5 and 6 of secondary school to give their co-students an example of responsible and good citizen behaviour while travelling on public transport. Three schools (four classes) are taking part in the project in 2017-2018.The "Bougeons Malin" (Smart Move) campaign, in collaboration with the non-profit organisation Promo Jeunes, is taking place from October to May. It aims to raise awareness among schoolchildren in the Brussels-Capital Region, so that they adopt good, responsible behaviour on public transport. The 2017-2018 event is open to students in years 5 and 6 of primary school and years 1, 2 and 3 of secondary school and includes 75 classes and 1,454 participants.School-children and students also came to see behind-the-scenes during visits organised by the Public Relations unit, getting to know more about STIB. 40 school visits were organised in 2017.

Combating incivility

STIB is working closely with local associations to allow the positive reconquest of spaces and to combat incivility and vandalism in and around stations. In Anderlecht, STIB is working with the non-profit organisation Safa at Aumale station, where the organisation has premises that host study sessions. Every week, it welcomes almost 180 children for out-of-school activities and parenting support. The non-profit organisation Centrum West is working in Etangs Noirs station. Several young people have been heavily involved in the work, which includes the creation of new frescoes to adorn the station. The young people from these two non-profit organisations were also involved in cleaning the two stations during the "White Tornado" operations, together with STIB cleaning agents and employees.

STIB champions the disadvantaged

STIB continued its collaboration with Opération Thermos in 2017. This association has been responsible for producing and distributing hot meals for vulnerable people from 1 November through 30 April for the last 30 years. STIB volunteers organised several help-the-homeless evenings, from preparing meals to distributing them and also transporting volunteers and food to the distribution point. In 2017, 23 STIB teams served 2,574 meals. At the same time, STIB has strengthened its collaboration with stakeholders from the social sector, so they can meet the most disadvantaged people on the network and direct them towards the appropriate external structures. It has continued its partnerships with the associations Infirmiers de Rue, Bij Ons-Chez Nous and Médecins du Monde by organising patrols, supporting and training field agents and other actions to help the homeless.

Network accessibility

STIB works closely with the Brussels Capital Region and in consultation with the community sector to make its network accessible to everyone, including people with reduced mobility. In 2017, Delta and Trône were added to the list of stations that have lift access to platform level. With the addition of the two new stations, the platforms of 47 stations can now be accessed from surface level, either directly or by lift. New lifts have also been installed at Botanique and Simonis.Six bus lines (79, 48, 59, 71, 84 and 95) have joined the AccessiBus network. Each of these bus lines displays information regarding the level of accessibility of each stop: the drivers have been trained in welcoming people in wheelchairs, the infrastructure has been checked throughout the route, the signage at all stops has been adapted and particular attention has been paid to the vehicles' access ramps.

TaxiBus

TaxiBus, the door-to-door service for people with disabilities, is available from Monday to Saturday from 6 am to 1 am and made 91,954 journeys in 2017.Around 20 drivers, as well as managerial and support staff, ensure the smooth running of the service. STIB has also renewed its partnership with Brussels' taxis, which manage some of the journeys.
